Returning to Scapa after escorting an anti-minelaying patrol, two destroyers (Opal and Narborough) were blinded by heavy snow and a navigational error caused them to sail straight into the cliffs at Hesta Rock, Orkneys, with the loss of 188 men drowned. Commemorated on South Ronaldsay, and in ABG at grave E093. [Also on headstone Sophie Doris Mary, d 1928. Memorial also to Christopher Astley (qv) (?related)] Not found on Church Row War Memorial or in Parish magazine.
